Chianciano Terme, with its strategic location, acts as a watershed between the Val d’Orcia valley-declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004-and the fertile Val di Chiana. The nature surrounding its territory, at the intersection of large and small villages, constitutes a true heritage of humanity, traditions and artistic treasures. Exploring, riding on gravel roads, going into the trails is the best way to get to know every hidden nook and cranny of this corner of paradise. Tuscan hills, changing colors all year round, breathtaking sunsets and the profile of Mount Amiata and Mount Cetona are just some of the ways through which to enjoy a unique land.
Sentiero delle Acque
Sentiero delle Acque trail is 7 km long with an elevation gain of 214 m uphill and reaches a maximum elevation of 688 m. The route starts at the Theia Thermal Pools, immediately to the right of the parking lot, the dirt road runs alongside the pools and climbs west up Via della Foresta for km. 2.4, then turns right and climbs up to the repeater tower, the highest point of the route, and then begins a long descent, skirting the fence of the Monti di Sopra Farm, until it reaches the paved road, at km. 4.6. From here you can admire a beautiful view of the historic center of Chianciano Terme and the entire Val di Chiana, the lakes of Montepulciano, Chiusi and Trasimeno. Follow the next two arrows. From this point the road descends steeply for 50 m. along the Monti road next to house number 51 to go up a 30 m right turn into a field. Continuing on you meet a crossroads and continue straight ahead to Panel 6 and then at the next fork to the left to Panel 7 from where you turn right and continue halfway up the hillside to the carriage road that leads back to the Pools on the left.
Ring of the Capuchin Convent in Montepulciano
Ring of the Convent (of the Capuchins) in Montepulciano The route is 10.3 km long with an elevation gain of 268 m uphill. The trail starts from the parking lot of the Theia Thermal Pools, climbs westward skirting the pools and for the first part follows the same route as the Water Trail. The road climbs up Via della Foresta for 3 km until it reaches the Poggiardelli area, where you turn right and reach, in 1.5 km, the Capuchin Convent, the highest point of the route at 702m. The path skirts the convent before the entrance on the left and comes from the back, enters the forest following a track that reaches the repeater tower. Here the route rejoins the Sentiero delle Acque, which returns to Chianciano Terme.
Chianciano Terme - Montepulciano
Chianciano Terme / Montepulciano The route is 10.6 km long with an elevation gain of 226m uphill. The route starts from 493 m. altitude (lowest point) to reach 671m. (highest point). The start of the trail is from the parking lot of the Theia Thermal Pools. From here, go up Via della Foresta for 3 km, and at the Poggiardelli junction continue straight until entering the Provincial Road n. 88. Continue left for a few hundred meters, then turn right, following Via di Pianoia first and then Via di Totona, which reaches Montepulciano in the area of the Temple of San Biagio.
Chianciano Terme - La Foce - Pietraporciana Nature Reserve
Ring Chianciano Terme Location La Foce / Pietraporciana Nature Reserve The route is 12.8 km long with an elevation gain of 330 m. of ascent. The lowest point is 507 m. and 801 m. is the highest one. The trail starts from Località La Foce where it is possible to visit Villa Origo with its beautiful gardens and continues along the Strada di Chiarentana, towards Castiglioncello sul Trinoro and Sarteano. In this stretch the panorama sweeps across the entire Val d’Orcia and Mount Amiata. After 7 km from the start, turn left to reach Podere di Pietraporciana; immediately below the Pietraporciana Nature Reserve of the same name with its beautiful beech forest. Immediately below the farm the view is truly splendid and sweeps from the Val di Chiana to Monte Amiata; from here another 3.5 km downhill and back to the starting point.
Chianciano Terme - Pietraporciana Nature Reserve
Chianciano Terme / Pietraporciana Nature Reserve The route is about 7 km long with an elevation gain of 358 m. of ascent. The lowest point is 402 m. And the highest point 702 m. The trail starts at the archaeological site of Poggio Bacherina (parking), on the Via Vecchia Senese. Just in front on the municipal road, there is a sign, pointing to the original path, turn left and go down to the Astrone Creek. After reaching the creek, continue to the left, skirting the small stream and then starting a steep climb that reaches, after a few kilometers, the dirt road that joins the Foce to the Pietraporciana Reserve. Turning left you reach Podere di Pietraporciana, after a few hundred meters.
Chianciano Terme - La Foce
Chianciano Terme / La Foce The route is 8.4 km long. This trail starts from the parking lot of the Theia Thermal Pools and runs, for the first 3 km, on the same route as trails 01, 02 and 03, with the difference that at the junction to Monticchiello on Provincial Road no. 88 you continue straight ahead. The road becomes gravel again and after 3 km. reaches the Foce, passing through the Castelluccio.

This 40km route runs on the border between the Val d’Orcia and Val di Chiana.

The Sentiero del Nobile

An extraordinarily beautiful cycling route through the heart of Vino Nobile production, hence the name Il Sentiero del Nobile, which has its exclusive production area in Montepulciano.

The Sentiero della Bonifica

This trail is a bicycle route with a more relaxed approach because it is entirely flat, following the Canale Maestro della Chiana. The roots of Etruscan civilization lie in this great valley.

Heart of Val d'Orcia

The old concept of a country road, suitable for the transit of wagons or farm machinery, has now evolved into Strade Bianche, which identifies not only a Classic of early season bicycle races, but a real way of life: gravel. The Val d’Orcia, in addition to being one of the most visited places in the world, having become a World Heritage Site and Unesco Site in 2004, represents the most iconic Tuscany: cypress avenues, farmhouses nestled among green hills, the Crete Senesi, and villages.
