Archaeological Museum

The Museo Civico Archeologico delle Acque in Chianciano Terme, housed inside a former barn in the heart of the historic center, collects valuable archaeological artifacts found in the municipal area and has the most important collection of Etruscan canopic jars (i.e., cinerary vases with human traits) in the world. The exhibition starts with some reconstructions of burials and displays of grave goods, including pottery, ceramics, and amphorae, dated between the 6th and 5th centuries BC, a time of maximum development for the city.

The collection of canopic jars from excavations in the Tolle necropolis is very rich, while evidence of the later Hellenistic age includes alabaster cinerary urns and a series of wine-making rooms, recovered from a farm discovered near Poggio Bacherinae reconstructed here.

Dating back to the same period is the monumental terracotta pediment, which adorned a sacred building in the Astrone valley, not far from the source of the Fucoli and dedicated to a wellbeing deity.

The museum also documents the exploitation of Chianciano’s rich springs in Roman times, when luxurious villas and large thermal baths buildings were erected, and also appreciated by the poet Horace.

In addition, the museum is also accessible to people with disabilities and has set up a small “tactile” pathway, which can allow blind people to get to know some of the pieces displayed.

Thus, some rooms display Etruscan pottery and objects, and impaired visitors are invited to touch them; everything is integrated with explanatory plaques in braille. A very unique way to let everyone experience the mysterious world of our ancient Tuscan ancestors.

Museum of the Collegiata

The Museum of the Collegiata di San Giovanni Battista is located in the Archpriest’s building in the historic center of Chianciano Terme. Established as the Hall of Ancient Art in 1923, it collects a vast series of sacred furnishings, canvases and drawings which date from the 13th to the 19th century and are owned by the parish, municipal administration and other churches in the area.

There is a large 14th-century crucifix by Segna di Bonaventura, a wooden Madonna of the school of Nicola Pisano, and a beautiful polyptych with Madonna and Saints by the Master of Chianciano.

It is also interesting to see a small painted altar panel depicting St. John the Baptist protecting and supporting Chianciano from the 16th century, showing the ancient look of the town. Several drawings, canvases, silverware and sacred vestments are on display, dating back from the 13th to the 19th century.

Villa Simoneschi

The building is an old three-story manor house dating from around 1830, and is close to the historic center of Chianciano Terme. You can enter trough a monumental gate located in the middle of a garden with rare plants such as: Hibiscus syriacus (Hibiscus), Lippia citriodora (Lippia), Osmanthus fragrans (Olea fragrans), Ruscus hipoglossum (Butcher’s Broom
variety) and Paeonia officinalis (Peony).

To the right for those who enter is a neoclassical Chapel, to the side like a monumental bell tower stands a Cedrus Libani of considerable size, on the opposite side is a stone fountain with spring water (now emptied and no longer functioning), down a few steps is the shadiest and most private area of the park, a formal garden with tall trees.

The square to the south of the villa is dominated by the presence of a beautiful fountain (currently disused) in the center of a body of water with elegant polylobed edges, surrounded by a pavement made of local stone slabs on the perimeter of which four singular benches in stone are installed (now destroyed by vandals). At the far end of the forecourt, looking toward Mount Cetona and the valley below, is an imposing panoramic terrace, equipped with a classical parapet with stone balusters, below and to the side of which are the former lemon house and the Gardener’s House, respectively.
Villa Simoneschi’s garden is home to more than thirty specimens of plants, shrubs, hedges, and beds bordered by stones; some of the tall trees include: Acer negundo (Virginia maple), Taxus baccata (Yew tree), Cotinus coggygria (Wig tree), and Prunus cerasifera (Prunus).
